Radio products in the EU: what the RED cybersecurity requirements change

Wireless products placed on the EU market are assessed under the Radio Equipment Directive.

Wireless products placed on the EU market are assessed under the Radio Equipment Directive. Beyond the familiar electromagnetic compatibility and electrical safety work, the directive also covers protection of network and personal data, privacy, and the ability to handle security updates.

The effect on engineering shows up at project start: the firmware update path, how credentials are stored, and the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi pairing flow all need a written design description, and the samples must represent production firmware. Leaving this until the pre-submission stage usually means rerunning the radio and safety work.

Before samples are released, confirm three things: the certified module matches the model actually used, firmware is updatable with signature verification, and the compliance statement shipped with the product is the current version.
